A Passion for Growth

Jim Stevenson founded Bletchley Group as a digital business consultancy in 2000.

Named after Bletchley Park, home of the wartime code-breaking operation that changed the course of history. It was Alan Turing who, in 1936, first mapped the theoretical foundations of modern computing in his paper "On Computable Numbers" - a piece of thinking so far ahead of its time that the world took years to catch up with it. By 1939, Turing was at Bletchley Park, turning that theory into practice with the Bombe, the machine that cracked the Enigma code and helped shorten the war.

He did not do it alone. Engineer Tommy Flowers took the same spirit of relentless, purposeful thinking and built Colossus - the world's first programmable electronic computer - demonstrating what happens when brilliant individual thinking is brought into a team with a shared mission and a barrier worth breaking through. That combination of intellectual courage and collective effort is what Bletchley Park stood for.

In 1950, Turing published "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," introducing the Imitation Game - the challenge of whether a machine could think. Seventy-five years later, we have our answer. The question now is what we do with it.

Back then, the founding principle of Bletchley Group was simple: use digital technology to meet real business challenges, not just for the sake of it. That principle has never changed. But the technology has.
